The Council for a Better Louisiana celebrated its 50th anniversary
last week, commemorating a half-century in which it grew from a
lunchtime discussion of issues facing Louisiana into a significant
government watchdog and think tank. CABL sprung from not-so-humble
beginnings: a conversation at Antoine’s over the state of Louisiana
between New Orleans businessmen Darwin Fenner and Edgar Stern Jr. The
pair decided to finance a study into the economic, social and political
climate of Louisiana.
